Shopping local in Maine could mean exploring small coastal towns, cute ski towns in Western Maine, or meandering through the Old Port in Portland. However, one of our favorite ways to shop local is to pick up provisions at farm stores. Here are a few of our favorites in Southern Maine (I used some of the descriptions from their websites below):
Frinklepod Farm: "The farm store in Arundel, Maine, features organic vegetables, fruit, herbs, and flowers, local foods and gift items." They have a great variety of vegan products and also offer vegan cooking classes!
Harris Farm: Located in Dayton, Harris farm offers meat, milk, cheese, veggies, and in LOTS of maple syrup during the winter season. You can also go cross-country skiing on their property.
Saco River Farms: "located in Steep Falls, is a growing network of family-run small farms and Natural food Stores based in the Saco River valley region of Southern Maine and New Hampshire." You can grab tons of local meats, cheeses, milks, and veggies and also meet their family of goats that live there!
Snell Farm: opened in 1926 Snell Family Farm, located in Buxton is a "diverse farm in Southern Maine growing plants, vegetables, flowers, fruit, and ornamentals."
Snug Harbor Farm: Just a short jaunt from Dock Square in Kennebunkport, it's "an immersive, ever-evolving property specializing in hard-to-find plant material and landscape design suited for life in Maine and greater New England."
Wallingford Farm: "Wallingford Farm was built in 1804. Visit the historic property on Route 1, south of the center of town, in Kennebunk, Maine." Their farm store feels like stepping back in time, with dried flowers hanging from the ceiling, local baked goods on the counter, and plants galore.
Spiller Family Farm: located in Wells offers U-pick options most of the year (apples, strawberries, corn, pumpkins, etc) and has a large farm store as well.
Ten Apple Farm: Situated on 18 acres in Grey, Ten Apple Farms offers a VERY unique experience - goat hikes all year round! Whether you want to snowshoe in the winter or hike in the summer, the goats love exploring the woods with you!
