My favorite recommendation when visitors ask what they should do/see in Portland is taking a boat/ferry around Casco Bay. This is a wonderful way to see the city from the sea and take in beautiful views of lighthouses, seals, and plenty of islands in the bay. It's easy to hop on a boat and explore Casco Bay and can be really affordable (or luxurious depending on your budget). Here are a few ways to explore:
Casco Bay Lines: This is my go-to for an affordable and authentic way to explore the islands and see the sights. If you're feeling adventurous, simply purchase a Mailboat Run or Sunset Run and hop aboard to enjoy a cruise around the bay lasting several hours for less than $20. You can also buy tickets for one specific island and spend the day exploring (Peaks Island is a great example of this as you can rent bikes or a golf cart and grab lunch at several locations).
Water Taxis: Portland is lucky enough to have lots of water taxi options to get you where you need to go. Two of my favorites are Fogg Water Taxi and Bird's Eye Maine. Both companies have standard rates to popular islands but will also curate private tours for you (did someone say beach picnic on an island with a historic fort from the 1800s)!?
So if you're in the mood for a night out at The Crown Jewel on Great Diamond Island you can hop on the ferry or book a water taxi!
Sailboats: Hopping on one of the historic sailboats in the harbor is a unique and luxurious way to see Casco Bay. Portland Schooner Company has a beautiful fleet and offers daily sails up to 3 x a time as well as private charters.
Fortland: One of the newest and most unique accommodations in Portland is on an island. Located on House Island, Fortland offers luxury yurts and canvas tents to unplug and relax for a few nights with breathtaking views of Portland’s skyline as well as a front-row view of all the boats going by.
If you don't have time to stay over, don't worry- you can explore the island and the historic Fort Scammel with Maine Brews Cruise (SUCH a fun tour)!
There are tons of great ways to explore Casco Bay, and these are just a few of my favorite!
